Brigid’s Cloak

Brigid is fire. She brings light, she brings heat, she brings warmth. She can bring destruction if you do not treat her with respect.

Yet she is also the goddess of springs and clear water, profound pools and depths of fresh, nourishing life.

There are tales of men who wander by the pools in the forest glade, tales that such men go into the forest and do not come out.

They do usually reappear, a mooncycle or a halfyear later, more or less the same as they were when they went in, except perhaps a bit stronger.

Also they have a strange look in their eyes, as though they are still listening or trying to listen to the beautiful song which lured them in. They strayed too close to the edge, then, and that’s when Brigid could play with them.

For Brigid holds the boundaries. The boundaries! The places where one thing ends and another begins. When she spreads her cloak you can see how much space she takes up, and you can spread your cloak too.

It may seem small. It may seem like your space does not stretch very far.

Try it, try laying down your cloak upon the earth. It’s not so big, is it? But wait, what’s this? – it is folded at the edges. Try unfolding it.

Now your space is a bit bigger. Oh look, it is still a bit folded – let’s unfold it again.

And again. And again.

And you see that your space stretches out, encompassing many beautiful things which are yours to nurture and to play with.

And now, finally, you see the edge. The edge of the cloak which you did not think would cover anything particularly significant.

Now you see the edge, over there towards the horizon. That’s your true edge. And that boundary is something which Brigid can guard.

She is not interested in the tiny bars you set around your cage and say ‘this is as far as I go’.

That’s not your true edge. She knows it. You know it.

If you want to be a warrior (and Brigid can show us that we are all warriors), you need to understand where this true edge is.
